Members of Parliamentary Group of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on Inter-Parliamentary Relations with the United States of America had a meeting with Senator Thomas Daschle, former Senate majority leader, and Omar Ashmawy, Chief of Staff of the Office of Congressional Ethics on February 15 in Kyiv, organized by NDI (National Democratic Institute).
Participants discussed the challenges faced by Ukraine and the possible ways to resist them. The format of the meeting contributed to a frank discussion.
Viktor Chumak, Co-Chair of the group, stressed the importance of continuing and strengthening sanctions against the Russian Federation to the full de-occupation of the Crimean peninsula. One of the topics discussed was the anti-corruption reform. Among the challenges in this area were called inherited institutional shortcomings, lack of transparency in the financing of political parties and conflict of interests.o-Chair Viktor Halasiuk thanked foreign colleagues for their attention to the situation in Ukraine and the constant support that the United States provide Ukraine. He also shared his views on the socio-economic situation in Ukraine.
First Deputy Co-Chair Ivanna Klympush-Tsyntsadze, Deputy Co-Chair Leonid Yemets and president of the All-Ukrainian NGO "Ukrainian Strategy" Anatoliy Pinchuk paid attention and stressed the urgency of the judiciary and constitutional reforms, and the need of improvement of the legislation on elections.
Representatives of the group assured that MPs understand their political responsibility and the need for radical modernization - institutional, economic and social. They also stressed that successful targeted and efficient transformation of Ukraine is possible with a comprehensive and well-coordinated support of the United States.
Senator Thomas Daschle mentioned that he understands all the difficulties that Ukraine faced because of aggression of the Russian Federation, but in the same time, he emphasized the importance to continue to follow the path of reforms. He added that the US supports what has already been done to transform Ukraine and called for more active participation in the process.
In the conclusion of the meeting, representatives of the Parliamentary Group and Senator Daschle discussed possible variants and plans for further cooperation.
